BERNARDO RUIZ'S GRIPPING NEW FILM 'REPORTERO' IS NOW AVAILABLE
REPORTERO is an urgent and beautiful new documentary that explores the crucial issues of violence on the border, corruption and power in Mexico, and the struggle for 'free-speech' to discuss these troubling realities.
REPORTERO follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at ZETA, a Tijuana-based newpaper, as they work in what has become one of the deadliest places in the world to be a journalist. In Mexico, more than 40 journalists have been murdered or have gone missing since December 2006, when President Calderón came to power and launched a government offensive against the country's drug cartels and organized crime groups.
REPORTERO is a risky and groundbreaking film that should be part of any collection. It will be directly useful to classes exploring issues around journalism, Latin America and Mexico, the border, immigration, and freedom of speech.

Director Alex Rivera's Sundance award-winning visionary sci-fi film SLEEP DEALER is now available on DVD!
"Exuberantly entertaining! A dystopian fable of globalization disguised as a science-fiction adventure. Mr. Rivera — a brilliant young director — takes his audience into a future of “aqua-terrorism” and cyberlabor that I wish I could dismiss as implausible." This truly unique film, packed with lush visuals, is the perfect conversation-starter for discussions about labor and immigration, technology and ethics, globalization and the environment."
SubCine is very proud to announce the DVD release of director Natalia Almada's award-winning documentary feature, AL OTRO LADO, a "lyrical and beautiful account of border culture." -Variety
"The documentary is handsomely filmed, whether in sun-drenched landscapes or crowded nightclubs. It's not a history of corridos, which have roots that reach back to medieval songs; it's a glimpse of art running parallel to daily life."
AL OTRO LADO follows an aspiring corrido composer from Sinaloa, Mexico facing two choices to better his life: traffic drugs or cross the border and search for work in the United States. From the remote coast of Mexico to South Central L.A., AL OTRO LADO explores the conflicts around drug smuggling, immigration, and the corrido music that chronicles it all.
